I started buying books at charity shops when I
discovered my local Oxfam Charity shop in London. Paperback books at
the time were being sold for 57p each, and used books with cover prices of
up to £35 were being sold for much less than that! Having been used
to paying cover price and an avid reader, this was a bit of a discovery.
The obvious added benefit was that my purchases were now also benefitting
a good cause.
I went home and cleared out a lot of old books that I had no further
use for and took them to the same shop where they were gratefully received
and sold on to raise funds.
I know lots of avid readers and most of them end up with shelves of
books that they will never read again. One day I was passing a rubbish
bin with several books
protruding and suddenly thought to myself that it was a shame that all
of those books weren't working for charity! From that brief insight
the booksworking4charity initiative was born and this web site created.
Its a very simple idea which will hopefully appeal to you. Not all of
us can afford to donate cash to charity, as much as we'd like to.
Most of us though have a few books that we can donate to our local charity
shop. Please do so today if you can, and if possible with one of our
stickers on the inside cover to help raise awareness!
Kind regards,
Michael O'Sullivan
