The methods used to bind books creates difficulties
for recycling, they cannot be recycled in the same way as other paper
products.
Metal staples can be removed magnetically. Plastic, stitch bound
and gluedbindings are often unacceptable to recycling plants.
Glue is a contaminant, and causes problems for machinery as it will
clog up the workings.
Options are generally limited to:

Re-use via dealers and charity shops

Specialist processing by spine guillotining.
This is not generally economical

Manufacture of products such as animal litter,
insulation materials or moulded pulp containers for packing etc

Use as fuel when burned in a suitable plant
